What the story is really about
Absence is not abandonment.
The story makes room for the feelings that come with night work, travel, and nontraditional schedules. It does not pretend that missing someone disappears. It gives a child something true to hold onto while they wait for morning.
“Then she remembered. She squeezed her palm. She imagined Papa Bear feeling her hug and sending one right back.”
